Plastic or Polypropylene Baggage Tubs—Does It Really Matter?

So here’s something that comes up more often than you’d think: “Which baggage tubs should we go for—plastic or polypropylene?” Honestly, we’ve tried both over the years. At first, I didn’t think there’d be much difference. But when tubs start cracking mid-shift or don’t stack right during a busy morning at the checkpoint, you start to care real quick.

A Quick Look at the Two

Both are plastic, yeah—but not the same kind.
  • Regular plastic tubs are cheaper, lighter, and… fine. Until they’re not.
  • Polypropylene tubs are a bit more expensive, but tougher. Think of them as the sturdier cousin who doesn’t complain when things get rough.

What Actually Matters Day-to-Day

Durability

We’ve had polypropylene tubs last way longer—months, sometimes years. Regular plastic? We’ve seen cracks after just a few weeks in high-traffic areas.

Handling & Weight

You won’t notice much difference carrying them. But polypropylene feels more solid in hand. Doesn’t flex or wobble as much.

Spill, Heat & Random Airport Chaos

Polypropylene holds up better under pressure—whether that’s heat, sudden drops, or that one passenger who loads their tray like it’s a moving truck.

Cost

This is where people hesitate. Plastic tubs cost less upfront. But once you start replacing them more often, you’ll probably break even—or worse.

Sustainability

If your airport or logistics company is trying to go greener, polypropylene’s a safer bet. Longer use, recyclable in many places, and just less waste overall.

So, What’s the Verdict?

If it’s for occasional or light use, you can probably get away with regular plastic. But if your staff handles hundreds (or thousands) of trays a day, polypropylene is worth every cent. Fewer breaks, less downtime, and fewer headaches.

One More Thing

Don’t overthink it. Just ask: “How often will these tubs be used, and how rough will the handling be?” The answer usually points you to the right choice.
